Adaptation
MAXIMUS is adapted to the Non-Dormant alfalfa production areas of the U.S.
MAXIMUS was specially selected for increase forage yield under moderate saline stress conditions, but will also perform well under normal hay production environments.
Breeding History
MAXIMUS was selected for twelve generations for the ability to germinate and grow under saline conditions.
MAXIMUS has also selected for increased resistance to root diseases, aphids, scald, Rhizoctonia, and nematodes.
MAXIMUS has also been screened for early seedling resistance to Phytophthora and Aphanomyces.
Salt Tolerance Trait
MAXIMUS was specially selected and screened to withstand saline environments. Tests have demonstrated that
MAXIMUS will germinate in half the concentration of seawater, with germination better than WL 525 HQ and CUF 101.
MAXIMUS also has demonstrated less yield loss due to salt stress than CUF 101, PIO 5939, WL 605, Corona, and Coronado. Growers in non-dormant production areas who have had trouble establishing stands due to soil salinity or poor quality irrigation water should consider trying this new variety. This should be used where marginal or moderately salty conditions have created stand establishment problems for growers planting CUF101.
Aphid Resistance
MAXIMUS has good resistance to all three aphids that are a problem on alfalfa.
MAXIMUS is especially recommended for areas known to have problems with the Blue or Spotted Alfalfa Aphids.
Nematodes
Nematodes reduce yield and thin stands. Symptoms include seedling death, stunting and thinned stands. Thinning due to nematode damage usually appears in circular areas. Produces with irrigated production or lighter porous soils will benefit from
MAXIMUS’ protection from nematodes.
